Review: Allegiant

Allegiant
Allegiant by Veronica Roth
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Edit: Nov 3rd 2013

I am so disappointed with the final installment in the Divergent series. It is not just as a result of what happened to one of the characters towards the end of the book that irked me. It was the whole thing.  The arc of the story changed drastically. There was a lot of focus put on genes and genetics that had never been previously mentioned in the series. At first it almost seemed as though this was a standalone and not the final novel of a trilogy.

The story started off incredibly slow and at times nothing was holding my interest. I hated the narration in the novel as it was extremely difficult to know whether it was Tris or Four speaking as there were very little to distinguish the two. As a result of the two narrators in the novel some chapters were too short and there was also some jumping in the timeline that confused me.

However the one thing that really annoyed me was the end to the conflict in Chicago. There was no war, no armies, no major epic battles of will and blood and guts and gore. No, Four went and had a chat with his Mother and all was well and good in the world again because they love each other and all that Jazz. This is not Harry Potter Ms. Roth! The Mothers love and care deal didn’t work here.

#disappointed

EDIT: October 27 2013, 37%
Trying to read this slowly because (a) Its Allegiant (b) The multiple POV between Tris & Four is slightly on the confusing side & (c) I accidentally read a spoiler that I am not looking forward to getting to

october? arghhhhh

Review: Dark Places

Dark Places
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After reading Flynns critically acclaimed novel Gone Girl I knew that Dark Places was entirely likely to be a dark creepy mystery novel. I wasn’t wrong.

Libby Day is a victim of a horrendous childhood. One dark night her Mother and her two older sisters were brutally murdered in a so-called ” Satanic Devil worshipping attack” their home on their farm. Libby escaped out a window and endured such a cold environment outside she had to have parts of her fingers and toes removed as a result of frostbite. Libby’s surly teenage brother was accused, charged and later jailed for the murders as a result of Libbys account of the night.

Years later and Libby hasn’t made much of her life. She finds it hard to get out of bed in the morning. She has been living for over 20 years on the donations given to her as a child victim of crime but her bank account has dwindled to less than 1000 dollars.

Out of the blue Libby receives a letter from Lyle. He is highly interested in the Day case and is involved in a Kill Club where enthusiasts share theories about serial killers, murders and unsolved crime cases. In exchange for payments – to supplement her miniscule bank account – Libby agrees to placate Lyles theory that Ben Day did not kill his siblings and mother that night. However what occurs isn’t exactly what Libby signed up for.

A slow burning eerie murder mystery that is a must read for crime, mystery, thriller fiction readers.

Cory Monteith Glee Tribute

So today  I saw the glee tribute episode to Finn the character played by Cory Monteith. From beginning until the end it was sad. The characters were angry, sad, angry, sobbing, acting like kleptos. But the one thing that grabbed my attention and made me feel the saddest was Lea Micheles tribute towards the end of the episode. Superb performance from her.
