The Dinner by Herman Koch
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Paul our narrator is dreading dinner. He and his wife Claire are getting ready to meet his brother and sister in law for dinner. He is dreading dinner because his brother is better off and more well known that he is. He is dreading eating at the restaurant his brother has chosen.
However this isn’t going to be any old dinner. Videos Paul has seen on his son Michels phone have shocked him to the core and there are further revelations to be heard at dinner.
Who did what? Who knew what? Who was keeping things from their other half? And what will they do to protect themselves and their own families…. You’ll find out in the coffee course.
Negatives: Took a while to get into the flow of the story as there were several flashbacks, something in the story-telling which may or not have been as a result of the novel being a translation was a bit stilted. Also almost every character in the novel were horrible examples of human beings for different reasons.
